Here’s the scoop on what you need to know to become a savvy floral consumer…

When it comes to the national online floral retailers, there are basically two types.  All floral websites display photos of beautifully designed floral arrangements.  But when you read the fine print on some sites, you’ll discover that the flowers are drop-shipped in a box from a central warehouse and are left on your doorstep, delivered by FedEx.  (And if the weather happens to be below freezing, the flowers will not last long!) A vase may be provided, but it is an assemble-it-yourself gift that the recipient may or may not appreciate.  It is certainly not something suitable to send to a hospital or funeral home, or if you want to make a big impression.

The other online floral retailers depend on the local florist to create and deliver their bouquets.  The nationals sometimes promise a product that might not even be available in the local flower shop.  Plus, the local florist is receiving only 73 cents on every dollar spent to fill your order to look like what is pictured on the national website.  With delivery costs and wire service fees that local florists pay, the local guys are most likely losing money on each order that they fill.

In addition, the national websites charge their customers unnecessary service fees that are not passed on to the local florists.  It is very profitable to be the big online presence, and very un-profitable to be the local florist actually arranging and delivering the flowers!

The result is the disappearance of the neighborhood flower shop, as more and more florists go out of business because they haven’t figured out that filling incoming orders from the big guys is actually hurting their bottom line.

What’s a smart consumer to do?

Rather than ordering from a national online floral service, do a Google search for a local florist in the city you are sending flowers.

BUT BEWARE!!!

Some of the big guys have created hundreds of doorway pages to their websites with individual city names, so that links to their site come up in any local search. They buy up local phone numbers and put up phony locations on Google Maps, so they appear to be a local florist.

When you find a company you think is a local florist — before you place an order online — phone them and tell them you’d like to pick up your flowers.   Ask for an address and directions to their store.  Only a true local florist will be able to do this!  A call center will not.

When you find a local florist, you’ve found someone you can work with to get the product and service you deserve.  Local florists are artists who will describe the freshest flowers available in their shops, fulfill unusual requests, and arrange for special or timed deliveries.  With no added middleman service charges, you will get more value for your dollar.  And you will be supporting Main Street America, sustaining those local businesses which are the lifeblood of our economy.

During the height of the busy wedding season, we often find that there is just not enough time to add to our blog. Looking back on some of the photos we took over the past months, we thought that these flowers were particularly lovely for an October wedding.

The bride's bouquet was an organic gathering of white hydrangea, Amnesia and ivory roses, and dark purple dahlias with a mix of various eucalyptus varieties.

Centerpieces for the reception at Longue Vue Club were in 6" cylinder vases. Flowers used were white hydrangea, Amnesia and ivory roses, dark purple cushion pomps and mixed eucalyptus. Note that by using cushion pomps over the purple dahlias that were in the bride's bouquet, we were able to duplicate the look of the bridal bouquet in the centerpieces, with a significant savings in the final price. This is one example of ideas that we can suggest to keep your wedding flowers within your budget.

This striking bridal bouquet incorporates different shades of magenta and purple,with accents of lime green that make the colors pop. The fiddleheads add a bit of whimsey and fun!

Flowers used include mini calla lilies, roses, dendrobium orchids, lisianthus, hypericum and fiddleheads.

For her recent wedding to William, Hollynn chose to carry a hand-tied bouquet of white and ivory flowers, which included hydrangea, roses, lisianthus, stock and astilbe. The flowers were accented with seeded and silver dollar eucalyptus.Hollyn and William's reception was held at the Renaissance Hotel. Centerpieces alternated between tall and low arrangements. The tall arrangements contained mostly greenery with some white and ivory flower accents. The foliage included seeded eucalyptus, silver dollar eucalyptus and Italian ruscus.

The low centerpieces consisted of groupings of glass cylinders containing floating candles, white hydrangea and ivory roses.

 

Their wedding date is a palindrome (reads the same way backwards and forward!) Parva and Anastasia's wedding at the Hyatt Regency Airport was a vision of purple and lavender. Featured flowers include lavender roses, purple stock, purple hydrangea and misty blue limonium.

As a wedding trend for 2018, we are seeing a number of brides choosing bouquets which primarily feature a lush assortment of foliage. This was the case in one of our weddings last weekend, with the bride's attendants carrying bouquets consisting of mixed varieties of eucalyptus with an accent of baby's breath. The bride's bouquet harmonized with the organic attendant bouquets, but included white and ivory flowers. Here roses, spray roses, ranunculus, lisianthus and baby's breath are added to the greens. The foliage in the bouquet includes two varieties of eucalyptus. As a contrast, another bride this weekend chose a classically sleek and elegant bouquet with little foliage. The flowers featured are roses and mini calla lilies.  

Bethany and Ken were wed in a beautiful ceremony at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden. Here are some photos of the lush greenery that made up the venue decor:

The aisle at the ceremony site was lined with fern plants, accented with stalks of white larkspur.

 

The easel with the seating assignments featured a garland made of eucalyptus, fern, springeri and limmonium, with white accent flowers.

Below are two photos from recent wedding receptions. The first reception at the George Washington Hotel in Washington, PA featured tall centerpieces of hydrangea, stargazer lilies, roses and pom pom mums. This sweetheart table features an arrangement of blue hydrangea, yellow roses and white spray roses.  

Dan and Sarah were recently wed in St. Paul's Cathedral and enjoyed a fabulous reception at the Duquesne Club. Of course, if it was a Ludwig wedding, the flowers had to be exquisite!

White flowers adorned the sanctuary of St. Paul's Cathedral, with white hydrangea marking the front pews.

Here's a close up of the flowers carried by the bride. Sarah's bouquet featured White O'hara garden roses, white ranunculus, White Majolica spray roses and silver dollar eucalyptus. The flower stems were wrapped with tulle from Sarah's Mom's wedding veil.

Half of the table centerpieces were tall, and contained white hydrangea, White Chocolate roses, spray roses and silver dollar eucalyptus. Eucalyptus lined the table.

Low table centerpieces were clear glass cylinders filled with white hydrangea, White O'hara garden roses, spray roses and seeded and silver dollar eucalyptus.

The bridal bouquet for Ruth and Michael's recent wedding featured shades of pale purple and lavender roses, lisianthus, and limmonium, accented with white roses, white hydrangea and grey dusty miller.
